Probably work? If yes, in which field? How easy is it to get a job in your field of interest after you graduate? How many have a job at graduation?

These are typical questions prospective students usually wonder about when choosing this masters but also students who are currently enrolled in the programme! In this blogpost I am breaking down the questions into two infographics. Hopefully you will receive the answers you want. Let’s start!

Which fields do most graduates work in?

The percentages you see below in the pie chart was given to us by the programme director on the first day of our programme. It represents which sector most graduates have worked in over the last 3-4 years (i.e. they mapped 95 students, 25-32 (ish) students graduating each year).

It is important to understand that just because these sectors are the most prominent ones and Management Consulting happens to have the lowest percentage, it does not mean that it is more difficult to pursue a career in that field. That can can be the case, but it also boils down to the pure interest of the students. I myself, am intending to pursue a career in management consulting!

Which companies do the graduates work for?

I hunted down some MBE alumni’s on LinkedIn to see which companies they are currently working at. I did my best to fill in each of the sectors.

• Management Consulting: Deloitte, Sirona Health Solutions, MONOCL strategy & communication, IQVIA, Huron Consulting Group, Amaris
• Medical Device: Coala Life, Johnson Johnson, Endometrix (Start up by MBE alumni’s)
• Pharmaceuticals: Roche, Novartis, Merck & Co, Johnson Johnson, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, Sanofi
• Biotechnology: Getinge, Cerner, Aquila Biolabs (company by MBE alumni’s), Qiagen, Tobii Pro
• Hospitals & Healthcare: Karolinska Institutet
• Other: Venture Capital, Private Equity (Industrifonden, KI Innovations), Industrial PhD, start up by a MBE alumni in physiotherapy, Scientific communication, Investment banking

Again, this does not represent all companies that MBE alumni’s are working for and I know for a fact that it is a general mix between big pharma, start ups and mid size companies. I guess most of my examples are large (famous) names but the teachers in our programme encourages us to go for start ups and middle sized companies as well. You probably gain and learn much more in those environments at the beginning. All are equally valid and MBE graduates are showing high success rates!

How long does it take for the graduates to get a job?

The numbers you will see below speaks for itself. I am using the 95 students again and almost half of them have a job offer/job at graduation! Imagine the relief, sitting there during the graduation ceremony knowing you have secured yourself a job, but then realising you have to go to work the next Monday…..hahah 😀 (the struggle never ends).

The peak in June (and January) can mean that the students already identified a company of interest and chose to perform their final master thesis there while securing a permanent position in the company. They use the thesis to get a foot into the company. The peak in August could simply be that the graduates start looking for jobs during the summer and get hired by august. It continues all the way through the fall and almost everyone have a position by the end of the year!

All in all, it is safe to say that – studying this programme opens opportunities for working at some of the biggest names in the life science industry but also teaches you interdisciplinary skills that can help smaller companies achieve their full potential and being part of that journey!
