During my current course in the Master’s in Toxicology, we visited several Swedish public agencies and got to know how they work. The study visits connected the things we learn in class with what is done by professionals every day (and probably by some of us in the future). It also changed up the schedule a bit, since instead of going to KI everyday, these visits led us to different locations – one day even to Uppsala.

The places we visited

The first place we visited was the Swedish Chemicals agency. There, they told us about the work they do in their different departments, gave us a tour of their office and a demo of their XRF (a device that detects different metals), which we even got to try out.

A few weeks later, we had a trip to Uppsala to visit the other two agencies on the agenda: the Swedish Food Agency and the Swedish Medical Products Agency. Both of them introduced us to their work and to some specific projects of theirs that are relevant to what we study.

What I liked about these study visits

To me, these study visits were a highlight of the course for several reasons. Firstly, they connected the things we had learned in class with real life. It was cool to hear about how the agencies work and recognize many of the terms and examples from our lectures. Additionally, several of the speakers were alumni of our programme. I always like seeing what alumni do, because it gives an inspiration and shows what kinds of work possibilities there may be for us in the future.
