Me, Myself and I

Hej! My name is Callum Regan and am the new blogger for Nutrition Science MSc at Karolinska Institutet (KI). I am delighted about this position and look forward to being a part of the digital ambassador team at KI.

Me at Borough market, London

Enjoying London Borough market, eating delicious oysters

I am from bonnie Scotland and am half Irish. I was born in Dundee and since then have moved and lived in 8 other places including London, Tubingen and Perth (the Australian one) with the most recent being Stockholm. I love to move about and discover new cultures whilst meeting new people from all over the World.

After completing my A -levels in a lovely scenic town in West Yorkshire, I returned to Scotland and completed a 4 year BSc in Cell Biology at the University of Stirling. This is and always will be a special place for me with happy lasting memories. I enjoyed learning about cell biology and to this day find the area very fascinating. At the University of Stirling I also captained the squash team and played football for Dunblane which was the city I spent some amazing primary school years at.

I then needed a break from studying and decided to work as a bartender in London. I have always been a hard worker, from my first paper round job at the age of 9 to working as a chef in commercial kitchens. I loved working in London and enjoyed the historic pub that I worked at. I then decided to live in Perth and then travelled New Zealand and Asia. This opened my eyes to the amazing world in which we live in and the diverse cultures and cuisines that exist.

Travelling in Vietnam

Exploring new places and embracing beautiful nature. Hạ Long Bay in Vietnam is a special place.

When I returned after my travels I started thinking about what I wanted to do and realised that I could combine my interests in biology, sport and diet all into one; Nutrition. Thus I decided that I would undergo a Masters degree in Nutrition. After all my applications it boiled down to Copenhagen or KI. I chose KI not just because of the location but also because the degree looked very interesting and due to KI’s renowned reputation for being an excellent University and a World leader in research. I also wanted to do only 1 year rather than 2, since I wanted a faster progression to the next chapter in my life.

As an individual I enjoy keeping healthy, love to play sport and am especially competitive when it comes to squash. I also thoroughly enjoy watching old films, listening to music, travelling, playing poker and am an absolute foodie.

I am excited about living in Sweden and want to swim in the lakes in the winter, visit the North of Sweden and hopefully learn some of the language. I plan to blog about student life at KI as well as life in Stockholm. I hope to be a great Digital Ambassador and can’t wait to share my experiences.
