The Lush Paradise of Kungliga Djurgården

Today, it would be my pleasure to introduce you to one of my beloved places in Sweden where I used to relax and enjoy all my free time after school, namely Kungliga Djurgården, a gorgeous island that shelters itself right in the heart of Stockholm. After reading this post, please make sure to include this spot on your bucket list! It is definitely a MUST!

Now that winter has officially left us, it’s as if everything has come back to life! The transition from the kingdom of the night to the reign of the day was quite quick, and all I can say is that now it only gets dark at 11 pm, while 3 am currently marks the sunrise in Stockholm.

The island of Djurgården is of astonishing beauty both at night and during the day. The gentle breeze, the murmur of water, the dawn chorus of birds, and the abundant and diversified fauna superimposed on the bright green background of the leaves that dominate the entire landscape are unquestionably a delicacy of taste!

After cycling through the whole park, I usually stop to feed some lovely ducklings. In fact, here you will get the chance to come across dozens of furry rabbits, nimble deer, sly foxes, and even grass snakes! One evening I clearly witnessed a water snake’s unsuccessful attempt to hunt a little duck floating along a waterway path. As much as I’d like to think that I was the hero of this story as I quickly stepped in, the truth is that the cute little wild duck already had everything under control bearing in mind that it flew at the speed of light when it felt the ripples left by the dangerous snake.

And don’t worry about the snakes as our seagull friends are here to have our backs! Not to mention the intelligent and playful crows and other birds alike!

During the summer, you can come to the island to swim, have a picnic, take an endless walk down the alley, take pictures with the majestic swans, play Kubb, or just ride your bikes! The feeling is absolutely fantastic! And oh, forgot to mention that Kubb is a traditional Swedish game where you are supposed to throw wooden sticks with the purpose of destroying the king kubb after knocking down each kubb block being placed on the particular baseline belonging to your opponent. I have to be honest…I’m tragically bad at this game, but I do have a lot of fun when I play it! So, give it a try!

Have I convinced you yet? If so, start packing and gravitate towards the island of Djurgården with the aim of discovering how many surprises await you here!

I'm Vlad, your Romanian blogger who comes from the very homeland of Dracula, Transylvania. While completing my first degree in International Business, I based my undergraduate thesis on the inconsistency of biological analogies in Economics. I began to study the genomes of ants and thus gravitate towards Biomedicine and KI. I chose Karolinska because of its academic and research excellence and because one day I wish to be able to make a difference in the field of Cancer Genetics. Visiting the remarkable collection of preserved medieval manuscripts from the Kungliga Biblioteket is on my bucket list.
