Favourite Time of the Year: Winter
Hej, everyone! If you are from a country that is not as cold as Sweden, before coming, everyone will just say, “Oh, you will freeze. It is so cold in Sweden; the temperature always drops below zero.” This shouldn’t scare you because, with some great hot chocolate and great friends, you will not care about the cold. I was so scared before coming here, but now I even love to walk in this beautiful cold weather. The most important thing is that you shouldn’t stay at home and enjoy the beautiful Christmas lights and events that are going on in the city. I have two great recommendations for you to spend this weather.
1. Ice Skating
As the cold weather begins, winter activities kick off right away in Stockholm, and one of the best is ice skating. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first time because none of us are professionals—everyone is there just to have fun. The two most popular ice skating spots in the city center are Kungsträdgården and Vasaparken. I went to the one at Kungsträdgården with my friends. The atmosphere and the music playing make the experience so delightful that you can’t help but smile at the moment. You can rent ice skates there and enjoy the experience for an hour. As I mentioned, no one is a professional—it’s all about having fun, even if it means falling down a few times! It’s especially enjoyable in the evenings when the lights are on, and you can fully immerse yourself in the festive holiday spirit. And the best part? Ending the day with a cup of hot chocolate with your friends to shake off the tiredness. 🙂 I hope you enjoy it!
2. Christmas Market in Gamla Stan
If you love exploring and enjoy the Christmas spirit, you absolutely must visit the Christmas market in Gamla Stan. A giant decorated Christmas tree, festive songs playing in the background, the charming energy of Gamla Stan, hot chocolate, julmust, and so many other delightful things await you there! Among the stalls, you’ll find everything from food to contests where you can win chocolate, as well as stands selling decorations and clothing. It’s so much fun to explore each one, and even though there might be queues, don’t worry they move very quickly! As a hot chocolate lover, I, of course, had to try the marshmallow hot chocolate, and it was absolutely amazing. My friends tried julmust, Sweden’s famous Christmas drink, and it received glowing reviews from everyone, so I think you should definitely try both! And don’t forget to join the games and win your chocolate while you’re there!
So, as you can see, winter in Sweden isn’t that intimidating. There are so many wonderful activities you can enjoy, and they’re all fantastic winter experiences. With these activities, you can embrace the cold and have a great time. Of course, don’t forget to dress up well while enjoying them!
Irem - Nutrition Sciences
Hej everyone, I’m Irem and I’m from Turkey. I am studying the Master’s Programme in Nutrition Sciences. I have been always curious about nutrition and wanted to learn about its correlation with our health, so here I am, at Karolinska Institutet. I’m a cat person since I was little and love coffee. I enjoy spending time with my friends and having “fika” in the city.
