A week in the MBE program
Now that the admissions period has ended, many of you are eagerly awaiting your results. Around this time last year I was in the same position, excited and curious about what life as an MBE student at KI would be like. How much free time do students actually have? What does a typical week look like? To give you a glimpse into what it’s like being an MBE student, I thought I’d share a week in my life of what I did and classes I attended ☺️
Monday
Since I had no lectures on Monday, my friends and I decided to make the most of the free time by attending a boxing class at the Solna KI gym. The session was fun but intense! It was exactly what we needed to kickstart the week with energy. Afterward, we played badminton for a while. One of the things I love about KI is the wide range of fitness activities available. Whether you’re into basketball, volleyball, or racket sports, the Solna and Flemingsberg campuses provide excellent facilities. Later in the day, I headed home to study and catch up on course readings for my Product Development class.
Tuesday
The day started with a morning gym session before my 1 PM Product Development workshop. The lecture focused on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and our task was to choose an SDG and connect it to the pharmaceutical industry for a group report. It was an engaging topic, sparking thoughtful conversations about sustainability.
After the session, I decided to study for a few hours at a cafe not far from the Solna campus — sometimes you just need a change of scenery to be productive! Since October, I’ve been part of TEDxKI’s finance team, responsible for securing sponsors for the March event. I wrapped up the day by sending sponsorship emails. I am really looking forward for the event in March 29th and am excited for the opportunity to experience my first TED event.

Wednesday
My day began with an important interview for my first project placement. The program arranges these placements, giving students the chance to express their preferences for the type of experience they would like. It was exciting to discuss my interests and potential opportunities with the placement coordinator. Later, I had another meeting with the TEDx finance team, followed by a study session at home. In the evening, I went out with my classmates to celebrate Lunar New Year over dinner.
Thursday
The highlight of Thursday was a guest lecture on drug development by SciLife Lab. The lecture offered fascinating insights into advancements in drug research. In my program we’re fortunate to have many guest lecturers from the industry, providing valuable insights on a wide range of topics. Afterwards, I spent a few hours studying at Biomedicum, reviewing the lecture materials and making progress on assignments.

Friday
In product development, we had another guest lecture this week on small molecule and biotherapeutics development by Affibody, followed by a workshop where we brainstormed ideas for our group project. To wrap up the day, some classmates and I attended a sample sale in the city before heading home for a well-deserved, relaxing weekend.

Right now, I only have one course going on, so the first part of this semester feels more relaxed. It’s given me the chance to enjoy some days off and do things outside of studying. That said, I should mention that every week and semester in this program is different! Class schedules change in terms of timing and length, so no two periods feel the same. But overall, I’ve found it quite easy to make time for other activities. Finding a balance between studying and fun keeps things interesting and makes the whole experience even better!
Wendy - Bioentrepreneurship
Hej everyone, I'm Wendy from Finland! I'm currently studying in the Bioentrepreneurship master's program (MBE) at Karolinska Institutet. I was drawn to this program because of my interest in the business aspects of life sciences and the unique intersection between science and entrepreneurship. I'm excited to share my journey as an MBE student at KI with you! When I'm not studying, you can find me at the gym, baking, enjoying fika with friends or crocheting. I am also looking forward to exploring the beautiful city of Stockholm – especially discovering and trying out different brunch spots and cafés.
