Kanelbullar: Where to get these popular Swedish cinammon buns?

This past October 4th was Kanelbullens Dag 2020, a whole day dedicated to the delicious Swedish cinnamon buns (a staple food of the country!). Having been in Sweden for about 2 months now, I would say kanelbullar have become one of my favorite pastries. So of course, I had to celebrate it! (Plus, I got the inspiration to write this blog)

But really, any day is a good day to treat yourself and eat one of these cinnamon buns. So where can you get them? (Short answer: I think pretty much everywhere in Sweden).

Long(er) answer: While you can get them in many different places, they are not all made the same way. Some of them are sweeter, some of them are fluffier, some of them are bigger, etc.

Grocery/Convenience Stores

I live very close to a Coop so I have bought kanelbullar there a number of times. It is very convenient for me to buy them there and I like them. They are very sweet though, so I would not have them too often. Other stores like Pressbyran, ICA and Lidl have them too, so you could pick one up while doing your regular grocery shopping 🙂

Bakeries/Cafes

There are several amazing bakeries and cafes in Stockholm! If you get a kanelbulle craving and you have the time, I would definitely recommend going to one of them, sitting down and having fika.

Kanelbullar at Cafe Saturnus. This was our group’s favorite as it was fluffy, big and not too sweet.

Kanelbulle at Skeppsbro Bakery. Really cute, freshly baked, and very sweet. Might be a bit too sweet for some people.

Okay, this is a cardamon bun at Valhallabageriet. The cinnamon one looked (and was) so good that I finished it before I even thought of taking a picture. Very fluffy and nice!

And there is always the option to bake your own kanelbullar. One of the Youtube DAs made a great video with instructions!
