Sports and Well-being at Karolinska Institutet
Are you a sport lover or do you love to exercise? If the answer is yes and you are a prospective KI student, this time I will talk about some of the most important aspects about sports and well-being at KI. During this blog I will also mention the most notorious sports’ events at campus. Finally, I will mention other physical activities that this KI offers to all students and staff.
Health promotion at KI and Idrottsutskottet MF
These two units manage and organize everything regarding sports and physical activities at campus Solna and Flemingsberg. On one hand, the Health Promotion unit is responsible for sponsoring physical activities for a healthier life style. On the other hand, Idrottsutskottet, also called “Idru”, is a Medicinska Föreningen’s (student union) branch which in collaboration with the health promotion unit organizes everything related to sports such as tournaments, week activities and more. If you are interested in reading more about what they do and offer or if you want to know how the online booking system for lessons and other activities works you can visit their site: Health Promotion and get all the information you need to take your next step to a healthier life style!
Sports
Idru offers a range of sport activities of which many are free of charge for students and staff. Some of the most common sports offered by Idru include: volleyball, badminton, futsal, basketball, floorball, netball, squash and ping-pong. Besides all these sports, you also have the option of booking special workshops/lessons such as hip-hop, capoeira and breakdance. If you are looking for more adventure, you can also join Idru’s hiking club or Idru’s ski trips which are carried out between January and April. Last but not least there is also the possibility of swimming. Unfortunately this activity has an additional price and is carried on outside campuses facilities; given that they are not equipped with swimming pool (I wish it had pool 🙂 ).
How can I join the activities?
Well, that is very simple. You just have to get familiar with the booking system and be up to date with Idru’s FB page to know the schedules for the activities. This is because every month there are changes in the timetables for the common sports. Additionally, these activities start at 18:00 and finish at 22:00 during weekdays.
To finalize this sports’ section it is important to mention some of the most representative sporty events organized by Idru. The first one is KI Olympics. These are literally mini Olympic competitions in which you can even win medals! To participate you have to previously register to the sport or sports you want to compete for. Once you have signed up for the event take it seriously and assist. This is because last year about half of the people who registered never showed up and it was hard to rearrange the teams again.
Once the great day has arrived enjoy it have fun and do your best. I can ensure you that you will not regret it! The second event is Sports day. This is an event carried out in a weekday in which you can participate in the activities organized that day. The purpose of this event is to promote health thru sport among students and staff.
Gym
If your thing is more about training or weight lifting, then BASE campus Flemingsberg and Box campus Solna facilities provide you with everything necessary for this. Here you will find all the equipment and accessories for performing your training routines. It is important to mention that if you do not know how a gadget works or if you do not know how to create your training routine you can always ask advisory to KI Health Promotion unit. They offer a wide range of different training sessions and lessons that you can book for free during weekdays. Health promotion unit not only offers training sessions, they also have yoga classes and the option to use Biofit space. Biofit is a small and cozy area designed to perform intense and quick physical routines between lectures or during lunch breaks, and trust me that these quick routines definitely work 😉
Tips:
-To get access to both campuses facilities, you will always need to use your KI card
-Buy indoor shoes with white sole. This is a very important rule that you must follow in order to be admitted at the facilities.
-Get familiar with the online booking system. This is going to make your life much easier
-Get familiar with the gym rules and always follow them
I hope this blog had been useful and that it helps you to get ready for lots of sports and exercise at KI!
