The PERSONAL IDENTITY NUMBER: a magic 10-digit number that helps you survive in Sweden

As soon as you get into KI, it is a good idea to apply for a personal identity number, but you might be wondering why exactly you need one. And the reason is very simple, namely, to fully integrate into Swedish society and, for example, get access to Swedish healthcare. Also, you should be aware that if you are admitted to a study program that lasts less than one year, you are not eligible to apply for a Swedish personal number.

What types of benefits can a personal number bring you?

Well, as many as you can wish for! You should consider applying for a personal number if you would love to:

  • Have quick access to high-quality health care services like the rest of the Swedish citizens;
  • Open a bank account and receive your monthly salary in case you would like to have a part-time job during your studies. For example, KI offers many research opportunities for which you can get paid!
  • Get countless discounts when shopping by applying for a free membership card (shop smarter, not harder!);
  • Start a mobile or internet subscription;
  • Create an account on one of Sweden’s most popular housing portals, such as Blocket or Qasa, and get an apartment;
  • Get home insurance;
  • Deal with authorities;

What does a personal identity number look like?

Your personal identity number is going to be made up of a 6-digit number that represents your date of birth, followed by another 4-digit number that will be assigned to you in the format: YYMMDD-XXXX (here, “Y” represents the year you were born, “M” is the month and “D” is the day, while the so-called “check digits” are marked with an X). A great idea would be to memorize your personal number as it will remain the same throughout your entire life even if you leave and come back to Sweden!

What documentation must be provided?

Visit Skatteverket’s website to learn exactly what you need to bring:

Start looking for private accommodation in Sweden within 4-6 months of your anticipated move-in date so that you can provide the address of the property when applying for a personal number; also make sure you have a valid passport/national identity card! Image Credits: Pixabay

Where should someone go to submit the application?

To submit your application, you need to visit your local Swedish state service office in person. Booking in advance is a good idea!

I would recommend you do this as quickly as you can as life in Sweden can be very tough without a personal number and it would be a terrible pity not to be able to capitalize on having such an invaluable tool that will certainly open a lot of doors for you!

Do not forget that this article is by no means a substitute for the official info, and you should always refer to the Swedish Tax Agency’s website to get the most accurate information!

So, what are you waiting for? Book your appointment with The Swedish Tax Agency as soon as you have registered as a student at KI!

Vlad – Biomedicine (BSc)

I'm Vlad, your Romanian blogger who comes from the very homeland of Dracula, Transylvania. While completing my first degree in International Business, I based my undergraduate thesis on the inconsistency of biological analogies in Economics. I began to study the genomes of ants and thus gravitate towards Biomedicine and KI. I chose Karolinska because of its academic and research excellence and because one day I wish to be able to make a difference in the field of Cancer Genetics. Visiting the remarkable collection of preserved medieval manuscripts from the Kungliga Biblioteket is on my bucket list.
