Wondering if the Bioentrepreneurship masters program is right for you?

Did you just got admitted to the Bioentrepreneurship (MBE) program? Well first of all congratulations! You are about to enter a multidisciplinary program designed to complement your biological or medical background with strong business skills. But you might still be wondering what it is really about and whether it is the right fit for you. As a soon to be MBE graduate, here are my thoughts on what the program offers and what you should consider before starting.

You want to combine your scientific/health care background with business studies

The program builds on your scientific knowledge rather than expanding it. This program focuses primarily on business, not science. You will not be diving deeper into lab work or scientific theory. Instead, you will build skills in areas such as project management, marketing, product development, and sales. Because of this, having a background in biology, medicine, pharmacy, or other healthcare related fields is essential. The program builds on your scientific knowledge rather than expanding it.

You want to transition to the industry after working in research or healthcare setting

If you are looking to move beyond academia, this program opens doors to a wide range of careers at the intersection of business and life sciences by equipping you with the essential knowledge. Alumni have gone on to roles in consultancy, medical affairs, marketing, entrepreneurship, market access, venture capital, and sales or business development.

I have interviewed several alumni in my blog series “From the Horizon,” where they share their journeys after the program.

You are interested in starting your own company?

Despite its name, the program does not explicitly teach you how to start a company step by step. However, it does provide the foundation you need, especially in areas like business models, strategy, and market analysis. At Karolinska Institutet, you can get support to starting your own company and also have access to KI Innovation, a startup incubator where you can develop your ideas and receive support to turn them into a business.

The program is very diverse in terms of nationalities and educational and career backgrounds. This diversity is one of its greatest strengths, as you gain insights from a wide range of perspectives. Group work is also a central part of the program. In every course I have taken, there has been at least one group assignment. As a result, you will be working closely with others throughout the program.

You don´t mind the “fluffiness”

Coming from a molecular biosciences background, this was one of the biggest adjustments for me. Instead of clear definitions, equations, and right or wrong answers, you will encounter more reflection, interpretation, and open ended discussions. At first, it can feel vague or even frustrating. Over time, however, you develop these skills, and they become especially valuable during internships and real world projects.

Changes and a new environmnents do not intimidate you

If you are moving to Sweden, especially Stockholm, there are some realities to be aware of. The culture can feel more introverted and reserved. Winters are long and dark, which can affect your mood. The cost of living is also relatively high.

That said, Stockholm is a beautiful city with a strong student life. A great thing to keep in mind that you are not alone with that and KI is very international where you will find people that will be in the same journey of adjusting to the new environment. You just need to find your rhythm, budget wisely, and give yourself time to adjust.

The Bioentrepreneurship program is a great fit if you want to step away from the lab, gaing knowledge in the areas of business, development and marketing, and work within the life science industry. Ultimately, it is a program that challenges you to grow in new ways, and put the knowldge your gain to test in real world settings. If there is anything you are wondering about the program that I didn’t cover feel free to send me an email ☺️

Wendy - Bioentrepreneurship

Hej everyone, I'm Wendy from Finland! I'm currently studying in the Bioentrepreneurship master's program (MBE) at Karolinska Institutet. I was drawn to this program because of my interest in the business aspects of life sciences and the unique intersection between science and entrepreneurship. I'm excited to share my journey as an MBE student at KI with you! When I'm not studying, you can find me at the gym, baking, enjoying fika with friends or crocheting. I am also looking forward to exploring the beautiful city of Stockholm – especially discovering and trying out different brunch spots and cafés.
