Housing series: KTH Housing

Hi everyone! Once again congratulations to everyone who has received an offer from one of the KI International The digital ambassadors have been writing a housing series in order to showcase the varied accommodations and how we got them as students.

You might be confused as to how KTH housing is included on a student blog for KI students. It’s precisely one of the unique opportunities that you might have as a student in a joint programme in the Master’s programme in Molecular Techniques in Life Sciences (MTLS)

Do you qualify for KTH Housing as a KI student?

In a normal circumstances, it would not be conceivable that a KI student is eligible for KTH housing. However, if you are a MTLS student, then you are in luck! You are, as you may know already, a student of all three Stockholm trio universities and you are specifically eligible for KTH accommodations. However, this year, only fee-paying students are eligible for this offer.

In summary, you can apply for the KTH housing as a KI student if you are:

  • Admitted as a Joint Master’s Programme (Molecular Techniques in Life Sciences) [may be described as a full Master’s programme] and
  • A fee pay-student.

During my admissions year, non-fee paying students were also eligible which may lead to conflicting testimonies depending on the year of the information. Please make sure that you are checking the most updated eligibility conditions on the official KTH website, or do send an email to the accommodations contact team.

How did I receive my offer for the accommodations?

I followed the KTH accommodations timeline and received my first choice offer starting the process from May. This is relatively a more hands off process with slightly more assurance than independent housing searches or SSSB housing bids, so I won’t spend too much time on this.

Accessibility to campus

The KTH accommodations is right in the heart of the KTH campus. While you may not be taking classes at KTH yourself yet, it is a very central location to your other school campuses as well. There is a T-bana stop a short distance from the doors of the housing (Tekniska högskolan) and multiple nearby buses into other areas of the city (E.g. Östra station).

In the first semester, you may find yourself taking Bus number 6 to the KI Solna campus in a direct route, or perhaps in your second semester, you may take one stop on the T-bana to Universitet. Alternatively, you can even take a nice scenic walk in the forest all the way to the Frescati Stockholm University campus. There are nearby supermarkets within some walking distances (10-20 minutes) but my go to store is 2 stops away on the T-bana at Östermalstorg. Overall, this is a very central location and will be a great starting point for your time here in Stockholm.

What does my Accommodation look like?

I currently live in a single room apartment with a kitchenette and a bathroom, in short, a studio. It is a cozy 20 m² that I have learnt to make into my own. Although there are days when I miss having a space that is not my bedroom, my dining room and my living room all in one.

In the left corner of the room, there is a full length window showing the sunny day outside. On the right corner there is a single bed with green sheets, and a small side table to the left of it.

KTH offers other housing styles such as shared apartments with two to three bedrooms, living rooms and a shared kitchen and bathroom. Additionally, there are corridor room options closer to SU. You will have to rank your options so do check out the others in more detail.

A table in the corner of the room squeezed between a bed and the wall. On the table there is a laptop, a monitor, keyboard and mouse which fills up majority of the tabletop space.

My housing came with the basic needs such as a bed frame and mattress, a table, 2 chairs, a small fridge, closetm, shelves and a standing lamp. All in all, there is sufficient space for a student moving in from outside the EU. This was all perfect for an incoming international student (me), who came with 1.5 suitcases alone after 30 hours of travelling. I was so exhausted the first day and I was so grateful to already have a bed to sleep in.

Additional information about student living

There is a shared laundry room where you must make a booking to use the washer and dryer. This is a common feature of these student housing plans even in SSSB. My available slots start at 6:00 and are in 3-hour increments except for the last slot which starts at 18:00 and ends at 22:00 (4 hours). You only have 4 bookings per month, so you’ll soon start to see how much you need to plan to do your laundry.

As of right now, my rent includes all utilities: water, electricity and internet. This is something you might encounter in your search for housing. Does the rent include utilities and if not, how would you navigate that?

In summary

If you are both a Joint master’s student (MTLS) and a fee paying student (Non-EU), you should definitely check out the KTH accommodations for the start of your new journey. It is conveniently situated for all your classes and daily living. The place is pre-furbished and also includes all utilities. Additionally, there is no need to queue days or search for individual apartments yourself. Thus, this is a really friendly starting housing for students. While I am currently still here at KTH housing, I also know many of my classmates who have moved onto SSSB afterwards, when they accumulated more queue days. Thus, the contract for KTH housing is not binding for an entire year but rather can be terminated with a 2 months’ notice (check updated policies if needed).

Do you fulfill both of the requirements that I have mentioned? Head on over to the KTH website for the start of the KTH housing application (May 4th, 2026) and wishing everyone best of luck. Even if this doesn’t apply to you, I hope you got a glimpse into a bit of student living here in Stockholm. Check out the other blogs in this Housing series to see how other ambassadors got their housing and what they look like!

Kai-Lin - Molecular Techniques in Life Sciences

My name is Kai-Lin. I am currently a master’s student in the Master's Programme in Molecular Techniques in Life Sciences. I come from the sunny island of Jamaica and completed my bachelor’s degree in Singapore. I felt drawn towards this programme because of the high calibre of research that Karolinska Institutet produces and the collaborative nature of the Stockholm trio. Since coming to Stockholm, I have started to enjoy taking walks (and getting some sun) whenever I can. Hopefully, I can share some of those mini adventures with you on the blog!
