6 interesting facts about MSc in biomedicine
People mix up between biomedical science and biomedical engineering. In fact, they both have a common foundation of knowledge in biology. You get to understand the complexity of our human body. However, biomedicine has no physics in its field, and it focuses a lot on research. It prepares candidates for either continuing in academia (i.e. PhD) or life science industry.
1. New curriculum in 2021
Biomedical science is the study of the life sciences. It comprises areas such as infectious diseases, oncology, neurodegeneration, molecular genetics, introduction to bioinformatics, and biostatistics. There will be a change in the curriculum for 2021. They are reorganising the order of the courses, so it is going to be either more specialised courses or broad in the beginning. Also, the research projects will be longer instead of having three different projects. Stay tuned for more info on the Master in Biomedicine programme webpage.
2. Global programme – diversity
Our programme is one of the nine global programmes at Karolinska Institutet. Candidates are selected from all parts of the world in order to have a diverse environment and raise cultural awareness among students. You can read more about the six reasons to study at KI.
3. Strong research environment
During our courses, lecturers talk about recent translational research. Hence, our studying is mostly from the material provided by the course lecturers and not textbooks. Not only you develop theoretical knowledge, but you also get to implement it into research projects. The master programme is two years, and currently, about one year consists of research/practical work. This will probably be prolonged for the 2021 curriculum.
4. Elective tracks
During the first and second year, there are elective courses where you get to specialise in the field of interest. You can read more about the first-year options in this detailed blog post and doctoral elective courses in our programme.
5. New mentorship program
Our Biomedical student union (Biomedicinska Utbildningssektionen) has worked with Doctoral Students’ Association to implement a mentorship program. Master students in biomedicine could get a mentor who is a PhD student at KI which is very exciting!!
6. Rapidly growing career
There is a great demand for biomedical scientists, and studies show that the job openings are expected to increase in the coming years. There are several pathways you can follow in the world of biomedicine, including medical research centres, pharma, MedTech and biotech start-ups.
