Christmas in Stockholm: Cozy and festive vibes

Hej everyone! The festive season is here, and Stockholm has officially turned into a fairytale. The streets are twinkling with lights, the chill in the air feels a little less harsh with glögg (Swedish mulled wine) in hand, and there’s that festive buzz everywhere you go.

For me, Christmas as a student in Stockholm is a mix of excitement, cosiness, and maybe just a little homesickness. But hey, it’s all part of this beautiful journey, and I’ve learned to make the most of it!

Soaking in the festive spirit

One of the best things about being in Stockholm during Christmas is the festive atmosphere. The city truly comes alive with twinkling lights, cosy markets, and that unmistakable holiday buzz in the air. Whether it’s wandering through the Stortorget Christmas market in Gamla Stan (the smell of roasted almonds—heaven!), trying julbord (Swedish Christmas buffet), or ice skating at Kungsträdgården, there’s something magical about how Stockholm embraces the season.

If you’re here during the holidays, these are some experiences you absolutely shouldn’t miss:

Gamla Stan’s Christmas Market: Tiny, magical stalls with handcrafted goodies.
Skansen’s Christmas Fair: A mix of history and festive vibes.
Ice Skating at Kungsträdgården: Trust me, it’s worth the wobbles!

Making the holidays my own

Staying in Stockholm during Christmas means getting creative to keep the holiday spirit alive. Since I couldn’t go home, my friends and I decided to host a potluck dinner in the corridor kitchen where we live. Everyone brought a dish and goodies that reminded them of home, and we had a delicious international Christmas feast.

I’ve also become a pro at finding joy in little moments—wrapping up in a blanket with a cup of tea, blasting afrobeat tracks, and binge-watching festive movies.

Giving back and feeling grateful

One thing I’ve learned this year is the joy of giving back. Stockholm has plenty of opportunities to spread holiday cheer, from donating to food banks to volunteering at community events (Stockholms Stadsmission, Christmas donations, local churches and community groups). Joining these initiatives made the season feel more meaningful and reminded me how much we can do for each other.

And of course, Christmas is a time to reflect. Looking back on 2024, it’s been a mix of growth, learning, and unforgettable moments. As I think about the coming year, I feel nothing but gratitude—for the people I’ve met, the challenges I’ve overcome, and the memories I’ve made.

A little holiday wish

So, wherever you’re celebrating—whether it’s at home, in Stockholm, or somewhere in between—I hope your Christmas is filled with love, laughter, and all the little things that make you happy.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from me to you. Let’s make 2025 even brighter!

Hi there! My name is Yohannes, and I come from Ethiopia, the Cradle of Humanity. I've always been curious and ambitious, and my journey to Karolinska Institutet is a testament to that. I studied medicine and developed a deep fascination with the intersection of healthcare, economics, policy-making, and management. This passion led me to KI. I look forward to learning more about healthcare economics and becoming a part of the vibrant international community at KI. In my free time, I enjoy writing and drawing, always exploring and trying new things.
