My top 4 sustainable food experiences in Stockholm!
What would Stockholm, one of the world’s most environmentally friendly cities, be without sustainable eating?
Fortunately, Stockholm is a hub for food technology and eco-friendly cuisine, offering a wide range of sustainable dining options. Nutrition, health, and sustainability are an inseparable trio, crucial for shaping the future of food. In our course, we often explore the importance of making environmentally conscious choices when discussing nutrition. That’s why I was thrilled to discover how many places in Stockholm bring this theory to life. So, where can you find spots that perfectly blend health, taste, and sustainability? Here are my top four picks!
Restaurant Oxenstiernan
If you’re seeking a beautiful escape from the city without actually leaving it, Restaurant Oxenstiernan, also known as Rox, is your perfect choice. This green gem offers innovative combinations of local and seasonal ingredients and has earned both the Green Michelin Star and the highest score in the 360° Eat Guide. Tucked away in a cozy courtyard amidst the streets and buildings of Östermalm, Rox provides a serene urban oasis.
Sustainability at Rox goes beyond carefully selected local ingredients—it’s integrated into every aspect of the restaurant. From eco-friendly packaging and tableware to sustainably sourced dishwasher detergents, every detail is chosen with the environment in mind.
During the summer, from Midsummer to the end of August, Rox boasts one of the best outdoor dining areas in Stockholm. When the terrace opens, the kitchen moves outdoors too, offering an open-fire barbecue and pizza baked in a stone oven. Great food, a unique atmosphere, and a picturesque garden setting—what more could you ask for?
Kalf & Hansen
Kalf & Hansen is one of the true OGs in the sustainability game. As possibly the first “organic” restaurant in Stockholm, it remains one of the best. Their focus on local and environmentally conscious food is unwavering, and their unique take on Nordic cuisine shines through in every dish. For instance, all their products are named after Nordic cities and are creative variations of the iconic Swedish meatballs.
Like Restaurant Oxenstiernan, Kalf & Hansen emphasizes using local and eco-friendly products. Additionally, they are committed to serving only ethically raised meat, ensuring that sustainability is at the heart of everything they do.
Mahalo
Looking for the perfect spot for your next study session, while keeping sustainability in mind? Mahalo is the answer. This vegan café offers freshly made meals, juices, and smoothies, making it an ideal place for a nutritious lunch during your study day.
Founded in 2015, this female-owned café has been dedicated to preparing raw, organic food sourced from local producers. Staying true to its slogan, ‘A lot of love for the environment, the animals, and our lovely guests,’ Mahalo has enjoyed great success. It has expanded to three locations across Stockholm: Södermalm, Kungsholmen, and Odengatan.
Rosendals Trädgård
You might already be familiar with Rosendals Trädgård’s renowned sustainability from previous posts. Located in the heart of Djurgården, it’s the perfect destination for anyone seeking an environmentally friendly café in Stockholm. The café is supplied by its own biodynamic garden, offering fresh and sustainable ingredients in every dish—from delicious sandwiches and soups to pastries and freshly baked bread from their artisan bakery. A true gem in the middle of Stockholm, Rosendals Trädgård focuses on local products and supports small-scale farmers.
The fields and garden not only supply the café but are also open for you to enjoy! Relax under the apple orchard with a kanelbulle and enjoy the Swedish summer. You can also pick your own flowers from the beautiful meadow. If you’re eager to put your green thumb to work, be sure to explore the plant shop and take a little piece of Rosendals Trädgård home.

Tade - Nutrition Science
I am Tade. I am Nigerian/German and the blogger for the Master’s Programme in Nutrition Science. Before KI, I was studying in the Netherlands. My whole life I was interested in food and sports, and that is why I decided to study nutrition. When I learned about KIs group-focused teaching and the international environment I knew where I wanted to go. When I am not exploring or trying different foods I am playing basketball in Solna. If you are ever up for the challenge, you know where to find me!
