Joint Master’s Programme in Health Informatics: the two birds to be killed with one stone
To kill two birds with one stone. An idiom which sounds quite harsh in today’s perspective, but might be suitable to express my image of applying to the Joint Master’s Programme in Health Informatics at Karolinska Institutet. As the name states, it is not a single programme but a joint programme, which offers several “two birds” for me “to kill”. I have listed them for you. Here they are.
1. Double degree
The programme is organized jointly by Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University. So upon completion, I will be awarded two degrees, a Master of Medical Science by Karolinska Institutet and a Master of Science by Stockholm University. Maybe the number of someone’s title is not something that people take in concern heavily, but in some countries and cultures, such as where I come from, the more the merrier.
2. Double perspective
It is created for students with either healthcare or technical backgrounds. Being one with a healthcare background, in the programme, I learned basic computer and systems sciences. You can read my review of the courses here and here. While my colleagues with technical background learned the basic medical sciences, healthcare organization and management. You can read Anne’s review of the course here. During the other joint courses, students will have a lot of opportunities to work together in group assignments, thus allowing us to learn from each other’s perspective.
3. Double facility
It is held by the Health Informatics Centre at the Department of LIME in Karolinska Institutet and the Department of Computer and System Sciences (DSV) in Stockholm University. So sometimes I have a class here, sometimes there, which is good so that the students get a chance to experience different kinds of ambiance offered by each building’s facilities. Preventing me from the monotonous commuting activities.
4. Double resource
Again, this joint programme puts me into the advantages of being supported by both universities’ sources of information. Both the libraries, with access to international scientific journals. Also, being the student like me who prefer to get my hand on the real book, the chance of finding the available book is much higher with access to both university libraries. During the programme, I also have the network to both the groups of lecturers, who provides vast varieties of expertise.
Well, I can keep on listing forever, but hopefully, I have made my point by now that this programme has a lot to offer. So, with no further delay, apply now. Be sure to check out these blogs also before you apply:
